VMware Fusion 2 Beta 2

Wow.

Parallels just got crushed at the hands of the almighty VMware. The new beta of VMware’s flagship Mac product just go released, and it’s hot.

I have yet to try it, and I really don’t have the time. However, I do see the features that make it one step above Parallels:

  • Mac-to-Windows and vice versa application sharing. Like Parallels, but you can make links in Windows open in Safari, etc. in Mac.
  • A very robust key mapping tool, to use whatever keys you want to do magic in the virtual machine.
  • Auto-snapshots are very cool (even if the half-hourly setting seems a bit excessive).
  • More integrated with Leopard: notifications in the dock, Coverflow, and better overall and 3D performance.
  • Clean-looking and not-at-all choppy HD video.
  • Unity mode now works with Linux, too.
  • More nerdy stuff…

I mean, this almost makes me have second thoughts about buying Parallels.

I just hope Parallels is preparing a rebuttal to this, there hasn’t been too much activity (at least, not as much as VMware).

And did I mention, when VMware Fusion 2 is released, it will be free for existing Fusion 1.0 customers. If only Parallels did the same. Are you listening, Parallels?
