WWDC '08

This year, I had the pleasure of doing live WWDC updates on Macteens. You can find an archive of the updates here.

Let me be the first to say that staying on top of the updates was no easy task in the least. I had to continually be on alert, constantly summarizing the presentation from a variety of sources: one audio feed and two text feeds.

I also designed the mini-app that was responsible for the AJAX live updates, which wasn’t too hard. It basically pulled a
list from a remote file every 10 seconds. All I had to do was add new
list items when I did an update.

I won’t bore you with the details of the products released at the keynote, as I’m sure all of you were following along with the keynote or are watching the keynote stream as we speak (as am I).

All in all, a happy day for non-Americans-and-other-non-iPhone’d-peoples (yes, that’s one big hyphenated word) who got word that the iPhone was finally coming. As a disclaimer, I am Canadian, and I’m more happy about this news than the average Americans-and-other-iPhone’d-peoples.

MobileMe looks nice. I’m pretty sure this means the death of those fun little iCards and Homepages, rendering iWeb half-useless. However, there probably will be a way that you can make a folder “public” on the new iDisk (hopefully). Still too expensive for people like me who don’t want to be constantly updated via “the cloud”. I think I can manage 2 devices relatively easy without it.

So, was this a mediocre WWDC or did it rock your socks. Personally, it definitely rocked my socks. I’m most excited for the SDK, and along with it those awesome games demoed today for only $9.99 (a major bargain compared to a DS or PSP game).
